HimMagazine

HimMagazine is a male magazine based on the genre of games, music, sports and gadgets. Over the time period of a week we managed to produce a title page and a variety of different articles and adds on the pages within. As a group we were all designated different tasks, and mine was to assist on the creation of the front page. Deciding different fonts and layouts of the first page was the hardest decision as its main purpose was to attract a wide range of age groups.

We studied popular uk magazines before undergoing this task which really helped our understanding of how a magazine should look. We found out the correct positioning on the pin icon(bottom right). From analysing other magazines we also choose a realistic price(top right) and thought of an attractive name(HIM.)

This magazine was called HIM due to it being a male based magazine focusing on everyday male humour and hobbies e.g.:football.

I think our magazine overall turned out very well as it included all the articles that intrigued men and most definitely reached the expectations of the Alevel class. However, saying that I think the photo on the front cover is very low in quality as the density and detail is very blurred and hard to analysis.

Testament Of Youth_James Kent

Today after a hour train Journey and an early morning start, we went down to Leister Sqaure to watch the first screening of film version of the real life novel 'Testament Of Youth'. Preparing myself for a boring and over lengthened production I was soon corrected. This 2014 film was made based on the first world war in 1914-1919 exploring the relationship and loss of loved ones and struggles the females went through when the males were forced to join up and serve the county. We are introduced to the main Suffragist female straight away as it shows us the present day of her life. After the 2 minute introduction non-linear is shown when we are taken back 4 years of her life to where the war and her biggest nightmare first began. James Kent used a large range of Mise En Scene with each and every character as they all had a variety of props/clothing and had to switch body language and emotion repeatedly throughout. I felt like James had tried to grasp the viewers and give them an idea of how living through the war changed people and ruined lives. We look deeper into the lives of thoses living in that century and the rules they had to follow eg:females cannot be left alone with a male unless a relative is constantly present. This shocked me when watching as teenagers these days can date and be free from young ages of 13, yet a well matured 17 years back in the 1900's was forbidden.  Personally I think he grabbed our emotional sides as we became connected towards the characters and understood their pain. i would most definitely recommend this new film to any and everyone as it had me in tears throughout and made me realize how lucky i our generation are to have the privileges we have.

Ralph_ Joe Randall-Cutler

Ralph is a 17 year old male who finds himself lost in a foreign country in the need to find his 'girlfriend'. I say girlfriend as throughout the 12 minute production he gave the impression that the female he was searching for meant more to him than money. Ralph is the main start in the clip and is portrayed as the protagonist as his only goal is to find his unknown lover...

However towards the end of this Joe Randall-Cutler production Ralph(played by Ralph Laurita) ends his hunt as he is overcome by failure and disappointment, leaving him alone in a foreign county. Thats until he meets helpful and understand Julie(Julie Dray) who flips his world upside down.

Director Cutler portrays Ralph as a youth who has no self respect, due the the way he is dressed, however as the film proceeds with discover he is just an average boy searching for the girl he loves. Friendship and Love are the main themes explored throughout, although towards the end he feels jealously towards Lorenzo, Very basic Mise En Scene was used as the lighting and camera angles were kept to a minimal. However saying that I thought the way it was set in France and had the unknown conversations between the characters was clever as if makes us unaware of what was being said, leaving us to focus more on their body language. Overall i think Joe Randall-Cutler thought out how he wanted Ralph to be viewed by us and allowed us to relate to the unfortunate boy more as the film went on.

Maleficent Movie Review.

Last week I was forced against my will to assist my younger siblings to the local cinema. It was a choice between Box trolls or the new Angelina Jolie, Maleficent. After the not so hard decision we ventured on to the 3D screening of the modernized sleeping beauty…

Being a PG production I was not expecting the children’s bed time story to be much good. I was pleasantly surprised. Director Robert Stromberg managed to enchant the viewers via the many different emotions felt by the characters. This 2014 movie was based on the 1900 Childs novel but smartly adapted to grab all ages and genders. Fantasy, Love, Adventure and Revenge were the most explored themes within the 97 minute rolling, as a vengeful fairy was driven to curse an infant princess yet only to discover she was in need of the young females help to restore the peace between mortals and immortals worlds.

I was shocked to discover Jolie taking on the main role within this fantasy film as she is mostly known for her action and suspense releases; however I think she really emphasized and brought out the two sides of an angry female. Elle Fanning played young princess Aurora who grew up under threat from Maleficent. For her age, Fanning played her character unbelievably well; leaving viewers like me believing she was actually a  teenaged girl in distress.

When getting home from my over rated and over charged trip I found and watched the 1940 version of Sleeping Beauty…the comparisons were nothing alike. Both narratives include a cursed female with an evil godmother, however within Maleficent there were less animated characters and a lot more drama. I also found and read the novel of Sleeping Beauty. I always tend to enjoy books more than digital screenings as they include more detail and are overall more entertaining. However it is the 21st century and we find more and more generations lacking in literature and old fashioned techniques leaving them addicted to digital devices such as the cinema.

According to my 10 year old brother Maleficent was ‘wicked’ and ‘well worth the money’, seeing as he never paid, his second opinion was invalid however I agree Maleficent was a well structured and well written narrative. Robert Strombery, Linda Woolverton and Charles Perrault did an excellent job with the remaking and updating of this well known novel. I would most definitely recommend this new, seat grabbing fantasy to any person wanting their moneys worth when visiting the cinema.

Telling Lies_Simon Ellis

Telling Lies is a Simon Ellis production which included no camera angles, no Mise En Scene and no actors. The video is based on the prospective of what we say and what we want to say focusing on the lies we tell others to either protect them or ourselves. In this 4 minute film we learn the lies told and the narrative as to 'why' they are lying. The layout of this so called film is a plain black background featuring a male voice having a mixture of conversations on the phone with different people, the black background features the script of the characters. As the attitude and tone changed in the speakers voice the size of the written either got larger and bolder or smaller. However the voice over and the words actually shown on the screen do not read the same as the voice over speaks the lies of each character and the words speak the truth. The language of the male changed depending on the person he was talking to ie: he spoke more polite and well mannered to the rich female than he did compared to his mum. I enjoyed the simple techniques the director used to portray the narrative however the way the voice over and writing were different became confusing and annoying.

Love Does Grow On Trees_Bevan Walsh

This is a very powerful 10 minute clip based on male seductions. It is based in the 1900s where males did not have the privileges that the 21st century have. Internet was unavailable and digital devices were not yet made meaning seductive videos, such as porn were not yet created. We are introduced to the main character immediately as we are shown the child standing with a negative attitude in a football goal! The boy discovers a paper cut out of a well groomed female, wearing minimal clothing and loses concentration in the game. This is a very important part on the video as it tells us how the obsession for naked females came around. The director cuts this scene short with a black image and muffled voices in the background! This grabs the viewers attention as we are confused and interested as to wheather the narratives is going to change. We learn through out this short film that images of females in indecent poses, wearing revealing clothes are needed to seduce men. I think Walsh fully shows the theme of lust and greed as a twist is given towards the end of the clip!

The title of this mini movie came from a section in the narrative when the boy is surrounded by magazine cut outs hanging above him on trees!

Overall I think Bevan Walsh really captured the idea of sexual pleasures and how time period can affect relationships!

60 Second Video- Review.

With my 60 second video I can honestly say it is an embarrassment… I am dressed inappropriately as I am wearing night clothes and look unprofessional. Personally I feel I portrayed myself as a lazy student due to the unplanned and messy layout of the clip. However, saying that, I believe I covered key points that symbolized me and allowed the viewer to receive a deeper insight to the subjects I chose and career I see myself following.

To make this video better I would have liked to have made it longer as it didn’t quite reached the given time of 60 seconds. I would have also liked to have included a variety of different points, as well as a more fun and energetic attitude. I added music to the background of me speaking as I thought it would have added affect however it drowned out my voice and took the attention of what I was saying.
